Drawing in stories...
An extraordinary mixture of Lower Lea industrial heritage, community activity, creative hub, growing space and urban nature, Cody Dock in east London does events differently.
For its Cody Dock Summer Live event, part of London Festival of Architecture, in a day of creative workshops, tours, rolling bridge demonstration, food and music, I was asked to do a community mural to gather in local stories, learn what the place means to its visitors and find out what they’d like to learn.
Starting off the mural with key locations and a great big loop of river, I encouraged people to get involved or drew people’s stories for them.
This conversational way of working invited in all sorts of personal, informal memories and observations from people of all ages, from working history through urban oasis to what little kids love in the here and now.
The process was active, can-do and human – which is very Cody Dock.
