Seeing the point

Montage of a sketch of a dog looking both ways, the exterior of St Bride Foundation and a drawer of type with the label 'hands' on the front and a pointing hand

I’ve been researching for my talk on the printer’s fist – the pointing hand symbol – for Nerd Nite London, a night of short talks on niche subjects.

I was the first graphic designer to speak at Nerd Nite London and this will be my seventh talk (Find out about the others here). The premise is that I know almost nothing so I go on a voyage of nerdery to find out more.

It’s marvellous to find things online. But I can’t overstate the benefits of foraging in person. I get to explore fascinating places, meet interesting people and find stuff I wasn’t looking for.

At St Bride Library, on a book I had reserved to look at, a spine that was a joy in itself and an invitation to see more work in the print room; at New North Press, a label on a drawer; on my journey, a bonus dog, which is, oddly, relevant. There is much more.

It’s not just on talks like this that I delve into the subject matter. Work with me and I’m all in. That’s more than some clients need or want. But it’s nicely-aligned with curious clients and collaborators looking for fellow creatures to work with them on their own discoveries or to do talks and guest lectures for their organisations.

Nerd Nite London will be at its new home in Stoke Newington on 25 February 2026. Book tickets here.
