Creative adventuring

Montage of pictures: Lydia playing with reflections on the train, sketch of La Piscine in situ, section of exterior cropping the name to 'see'

I’ve been to Lille for the day, to see La Piscine, a museum of art and industry in an art deco swimming pool. It’s thrillingly good, using its setting as a fresh way to think about the objects in it.

I saw much else besides; this, after two weeks in my home city pottering around exhibitions I had meant to see and places I had never visited.

If that all sounds a bit “what I did in my holidays”, here’s why this matters…

Design and illustration are much, much more than ‘doing’. To practise well takes practice – of skills and of the art of looking at things. Wandering and wondering are both pleasures and essential to bring insight, knowledge and fresh thinking to creative work.

As I approached La Piscine, trying to find an angle for a photograph I noticed that if you crop ‘musée’ you get ‘see’. It’s nice when that happens.
