Rounding up and gathering in: week 10 of my Tower Gallery artist residency
“How many drawings have you done?” In week 10 of my three-month artist residency at Tower Gallery I’ve looked through all of the work to find out. Let’s just say it’s a personal best (or worst) for creative overproductivity…
Those two days a week seem to have gathered momentum as I’ve gone along. It’s been a challenging process that’s the opposite of my design and illustration work. But my designer’s instinct to start a project by planning it has given the project a structure, to enable me to make the most (literally) of this very unusual residency.
To make my materials tests and rubbings useful as resources, I’ve bound them together, using post binding for the loose leaves and making covers from leftover wallpaper samples and board.
Small scraps of wallpaper and plain paper will become tiny sketchbooks for my Open House sketch tour on 19 September for anyone who would like to join but doesn’t have materials.
And there have been sketches on my way out of the building, on some bible paper samples I had had in for a design project. I love a bit of reuse and this one is nicely appropriate.

Two pieces from my residency are on show at the Tower Gallery September Open: East Tower, Memorial Community Church, 395 Barking Rad, London E13, Fridays to Sundays 3pm – 7pm, 11 September to 4 October. I'll be running a sketching activity on 26 September in the residency studio, of the interior and view. Numbers are limited so booking is essential.
