Translation. That’s an odd word to use for visual communications. But one of the most interesting parts of my work is spotting a connection between two apparently-unrelated things and using it to invite people in to the words, or to an idea.
Some of that work is subtle. Some of it involves work behind the scenes. But in my own work, I exercise those skills in ways that are a bit more out there.
My sampler about age-based assumptions uses a traditional medium to talk about modern attitudes to age. The words are notes I made in a writing workshop at East End WI by copywriter and harpist Fiona Thompson.
At life drawing, which I do as a ballet dancer does class, I use waste materials. So a class companion brought me some waste maps, expecting me to draw on the back. Instead, I set myself the challenge of finding the pose in its contours.
These creative adventures find their way into the work I do with clients and collaborators, exploring subject matter and adding relevance.
The sampler is on show at the Women’s Spring Open, The Brady Arts and Community Centre, Hanbury Street, London E1 5HU, until 29 March. Mon - Fri 9am - 7pm, Sat 10am - 4pm.
