I’ve run masterclasses on getting over a creative block. One of my top tips is going for a walk. Somehow, sprung from my desk, my view long, the ideas come to me that are not going to pop out of my screen, however long I stare at it.
But I don’t mention doing the housework – possibly because I hate it. It’s something I have to do, not something I want to do. And yet, in a breather from the hoovering I find myself scribbling roughs for illustrations and ideas for writing.
My theory is that if I give the rational bit of my mind something straightforward to do, the rest of it can noodle around making odd connections and wander along trains of thought. So perhaps it’s the rhythm in striding out that does that too.
For every rule, there is, of course, an exception. Sometimes there’s no time. I’m only half-joking when I say that my best ideas come from inspiration or desperation…
But it’s nice to know that if I’m stuck, there’s something I can do. Even if it’s the chores.
