I bring my design head to my live sketching gigs. So booked for live sketching a members’ breakfast at the Gantry, one of innovative social enterprise The Trampery’s workspaces, at Here East in London’s Olympic Park, I did two things:
I asked for some waste materials to turn into sketchbooks – circularity and good environmental practice are important here. And I took my design cue from the colourful, characterful Hawkins\Brown designed studios.
The materials, old GF Smith paper swatches from designer and Studio Snack podcast collaborator Narcis Sauleda, were not what I was expecting. Most were cards of colour chips rather than sheets of paper. Which was an opportunity… thinking as I made, I realised that these could be used more interestingly than plain colours in homage to the architecture.
This has been my second live sketching gig for The Trampery – in 2023, I drew on garment swing tags made from waste at its sustainable fashion campus Trampery Fish Island’s first birthday party.
