More than decoration

A design workshop at Cody Dock…

What’s on a plant label? Well, that depends on why it’s there, who it’s for, what you’d like them to know and where it is.

I covered all of that and more in a workshop at Cody Dock with its community participation coordinator Basia Rabczuk, who led the making and painting of wooden labels from offcuts.

The design activity was devised to use the drying time and then enable participants to add text and images to a label to take away. Using Basia’s prototypes, I had done digital tryouts to show things to think about and distilled the display into a one-page resource to take away.

But what I love about workshops is what everyone brings… As we chatted, participants contributed gardening knowledge, human stories and extra uses for the labels. The results were full of surprises, ideas and delights that will bring richness to labelling for the upcoming seasons.

Did I just do the graphics bit? Goodness, no – there was fun to be had joining in with the sanding, drilling, painting and chat.
