For a talk at City Lit, I’ve been looking at how and why my creative practice has grown, and what I bring from one strand to the others.
It’s been a fascinating talk to put together – and here’s what it’s shown me about how creative knowledge and skills can work over time:
Logic suggests that I bring knowledge from my core practice of graphic design to my creative direction (using what I know) and sketch illustration (the thinking on paper in my design practice that’s now a thing in its own right). But I’ve found that each strand of work brings something to the others.
It hasn’t all been from the inside out – some clients and collaborators have seen new uses for my creative skills and knowledge before I have.
And because I come to my newer work without preconceptions, I’ve been open to all sorts of opportunities, interested to have new topics to delve into and new experiments to try.
