It’s just a label for an ingredients bottle; a simple, utilitarian thing. Except that this label is for independent perfumer Sarah McCartney’s Scenthusiasm perfume workshops. Sarah likes good stationery, fountain pens and ink – her formula books are things of wonder. So there’s no ‘just’ about it…
Working with Amberley Labels and Sarah, herself an experienced production manager, there’s been a process of looking at, feeling and testing samples of materials that can be written on, exploring print and blocking finishes and working within the constraints of the printing method. Simple though it looks, the design has involved thinking about curved surfaces, colour and space for variable amounts of handwriting. And the simpler a design is, the fewer places there are to hide.
The result is a subtle label with a burnished border that allows the handwritten ingredients names to sing out. The care that’s gone into it sits well with the depth and knowledge in the workshops.
Here’s to the next adventure in perfume…
