A four-year conversation

Montage of pictures: podcast collaborators Lydia and narcis reflected in a Christmas bauble, shadow selfie, the Gantry co-working space and the bench where the project began

Studio Snack, a food podcast about design in collaboration with Narcis Sauleda, started with conversations in lockdown between two friends and former studio-mates, perched with coffees and snacks on one of the Here East campus benches.

We kept saying that we wished we’d recorded our conversations. So we did, in a format that started with a snack, delved into its story, we explored what that told us about design and we did a creative experiment.

Four seasons later, in our project finale episode we go for a walk, starting where we had the idea, wandering through our favourite episodes and chatting about what we’ve learned.

Why the finale? Well, we’ve been making the podcast just because it’s fun. We’ve brainstormed, researched, scripted, experimented, recorded, edited and blogged our way through 40 episodes. We’ve done biscuit kintsugi, taken a decibel meter to crunchy snacks, made an ampersandwich, assembled an international hedgehog of cheese, broken AI twice with an Eccles cake and explored doughnut economics with actual doughnuts. It’s been a laugh – literally (we’ve always had a rich stock of material for our out-takes episodes). And as with any creative project, we knew how to spot when it was ready to wrap.

But finale isn’t as final as it sounds… we have a follow-on project. Listen to the episode to find out more.
