Sampling green spaces

Detail of Lydia's textile piece using the visual language of textile proofs to describe the colour and pattern of green spaces

I enjoy the paraphernalia of printers’ proofs. Outside the test of the thing we’re producing are colour bars, information meaningful only to people who know how to get the best out of the job. They’re lovely things in their own right and so are strike offs – textile proofs.

I’ve used the visual language of strike offs to explore the colour and pattern in Newham parks, wilder spaces and a garden. Photographs and live sketches made for the project have been put together with handwritten and typeset notes, then digitally printed on cloth. The large wall hanging and single framed panel will be on show at east London’s Tower Gallery as part of a new photography-based exhibition.

It's been a challenging and interesting project, bringing together the strands of my creative practice in new ways and exploring a new production process. What I've learned will feed back into my work with clients.

People and Places of Newham is at the Tower Gallery, East Tower, Memorial Community Church, 395 Barking Road, E13 8AL, opening 11 Sept and then 12 Sept – 5 Oct Friday-Sunday 3-7pm with extended opening hours during Open House. Both of my pieces are for sale. Follow Tower Gallery on Instagram for updates @towergallery.e13
