Picking pictures…
Pictures are important to Kusuma Trust, a family-led philanthropic trust. They show as much as words tell about what funding can do. So in my 10th annual review for Kusuma Trust, we’ve used the new design framework we built for the last annual review to present the latest stories.
At the beginning of the process we go through a draft collection of images for all of the topics and case studies. Some are picked out that have particular meaning at Kusuma Trust; some can be chosen as part of the design process.
I choose pictures editorially, I look at the quality and resolution, I consider whether they’re on a left-hand or right-hand page, how the pictures balance across the spread and I ask about copyright and permissions.
Which all seems quite simple when I rattle it off in one sentence.
It isn’t…
I’ve gathered this knowledge over decades assisting stellar designers; working for design companies where quality is everything; secondment to a magazine, where I learned to work with writers; seeing printed work on press – and learning from pretty much every project I’ve designed that’s had pictures in it.
And there’s always something new to tackle, recently alt-tagging everything for PDF publication.
What of the other part of the story? Well, the great thing about good pictures is that they invite readers in to the words.
The annual review is available online and as a small print run.
