Pie. Appropriately for Autumn, it’s the topic of the latest episode of Studio Snack, a podcast in collaboration with Narcis Sauleda.
Which brings me to pie charts, this month’s creative experiment. As a designer, I’ve done a lot of these. There are all sorts of ways to make them look more interesting on a layout but they’re fundamentally quite dull. So with my illustration head on, I’ve made charts out of pies.
I realised that the one that was in my head – an open pie – was actually a tart. So I invented a raised pie with beetroot and saffron coloured pastry. (I have no idea if you can do this but the wonderful thing about illustration is that anything is possible.) Then I drew a pie with a stacked bar chart inside – the love-child of a raised pie and a terrine, perhaps.
Narcis went one step further, making an actual pie chart and using his oven as a design tool…
…But unusually, our experiment wasn’t the most exciting bit. We had ordered an object to see up close at the V&A East Storehouse. This turned out to be so thrilling that we abandoned our guest interview to interview ourselves. Listen to the episode to find out more, here or wherever you get your podcasts.
