Looking lively, sketching species

Learning stuff as I work makes me ridiculously happy...

It’s been a joy to be asked to sketch at Surge Co-op’s event River Walk, River Talk, River Study, a walk, talk and litter pick along the Channelsea River followed by an invertebrate survey with ecologist and invertebrate specialist Russell Miller.

Sketching bugs in watercolour is quite something – they’re lively in East London! I have to take in a lot of visual information very quickly so that if they flit away, I can finish the sketch from memory. And I’m as interested in how creatures move as how they look – my quick, gestural style is handy for that.

Participants peered over my shoulder as I drew and we listened to fascinating stuff about species. Batman hoverfly, anyone?
