Cooking with words and whisking up sound

A photo of a Pyrex jug, its measurements replaced with more approximate words, cookie cutters spelling the word 'hand', with the A turning downwards for 'handing down' and an illustration of a 1960s hand whisk

A pinch of this and just enough of that…

In the Mother’s Day episode of Studio Snack, a food podcast about design, collaborator Narcis and I have been chatting about the language of family recipes. So for this month’s experiment, we’ve been cooking with words.

I’ve started with my Pyrex mixing jug, replacing the measurements with 'pinch', 'about', 'some of', 'enough' – the instinct in the handwritten recipes.

Re-reading family recipes reminded me just how sensory cooking was then – literally handing knowledge down. So using my alphabet cookie cutters I’ve played with the word ‘hand’.

And foraging for kitchen equipment, I’ve found my late mum’s hand whisk, full of mechanical beauty and movement. I've recorded and illustrated it for this month's sound sample.
